Research Confirms Preference for Handwritten Communication

At Day-Timers, we’re always excited to learn more about how people communicate with one another, which is why we routinely conduct surveys to follow trends in note-taking, letter-writing and planning. According to our 2007 Letter Writing Survey, most respondents (48%) experience positive feelings when they receive a handwritten note as opposed to a typed one.

An overwhelming 86% of the respondents to this survey said that in the past year, they chose to send a handwritten note as opposed to using other means of communication, including electronic. Over 70% of respondents sending handwritten communication felt it was more personal and friendly, demonstrating special effort to communicate. In this age of fast-paced electronic communication, we are hungry for a personal connection with others. The handwritten word provides that connection.

When did you last compose a handwritten note to a friend, co-worker, or loved one? You’ll find some quick tips below to make handwriting a memorable letter an enjoyable, rewarding activity.

Letter Writing Etiquette

Writing a personal letter doesn’t have to be a cumbersome task. In fact, many people find composing written correspondence to be an enjoyable, relaxing activity. These tips will help you send personal letters that your friends and family will be overjoyed to receive.

Address and stamp the envelope before you begin writing your letter. Addressing the envelope last can lead to sloppy writing which could create a negative first impression or interfere with postal delivery.

Notate the full date at the beginning of the letter as well. Some people like to archive their correspondence, and dated letters are easier to organise.

Write legibly. Nothing is more frustrating than an unreadable letter. If your penmanship is less than ideal, force yourself to write slowly and carefully.

Have a basic idea of what you intend to write. A rambling, disorganised letter is not nearly as enjoyable to read as a letter that has a well-planned pattern of thought.

Spelling counts! If you’re not certain how a word is spelled, look it up.

Remember to finish with a friendly, but sincere closing.

Take Note: Writing Instrument Trivia!

Pencils are designed to last. They can also erase loads of mistakes – 8 kilometres worth. A typical pencil can draw a line 55 kilometres long… the literary equivalent of 45,000 words!

The colouring book industry has schoolteacher Mrs. Alice Stead Binney to thank for its popularity. Binney recognised children’s need to be creative, so she encouraged the invention of non-toxic crayons in a variety of colours. She also invented the name “Crayola®,” by cleverly joining of the French word “craie,” meaning chalk, with “ola,” from “oleaginous” (oily).

John Steinbeck wrote The Grapes of Wrath in pencil. His work helped create a one-man boom in the writing instrument industry since he required up to 60 pencils a day to complete this book! Fortunately, there’s no shortage. Over 10 billion pencils are manufactured worldwide annually!

Business Book: Giving Feedback

Just like the importance of hand written thank you note to a colleague for a job well done, providing verbal feedback is invaluable too. Harvard Business School Press Pocket Mentor title Giving Feedback provides a wealth of tools to show you how to develop and refine this positive and constructive skill. Find out more about this title and our complete range of business books.

“I've used Day-Timer planners through many “seasons” of my life.  At first my life was very busy so I used the 2-Page-Per-Day version.  As I got older and my schedule got simpler, I “graduated” to a 2-Page-Per-Week organiser.  Now that I’m in my 70s and life is simpler, the 2-Page-Per-Month suits me just fine.  Because of my Day-Timer planner I am often called on to provide dates and times when others have “lost” their information.  I’ve formatted my address list on computer to fit the address and phone directory so all my information goes with me wherever I go.  We’re retired now and travel often so it’s important to have future events noted in order to plan ahead. The Advance Planner takes care of that.  The Work Organiser provides space for notes, gift ideas and sizes to carry with me, and it’s ALL in my Pocket Size Organiser which fits easily in my handbag. I’d be lost without it.”
